Description

Chromic gut suture is an absorbable, sterile surgical suture derived from purified connective tissue, primarily collagen from bovine or ovine intestinal serosa. It is treated with chromium salts to delay absorption and prolong tensile strength retention compared to plain gut. The chromicization process enhances the suture’s resistance to enzymatic degradation, supporting temporary wound support during healing.

The brown coloration of the suture indicates its chromic treatment, aiding in visual differentiation during surgical placement. It elicits a moderate tissue reaction typical of natural absorbable materials but provides adequate performance for short- to medium-term soft tissue approximation. Absorption occurs through enzymatic digestion, typically completing within 90 days.

This configuration features a reverse cutting M-2 needle, ideal for penetrating tough, dense tissues such as skin. The triangular cross-section of the needle provides enhanced cutting ability while maintaining precise control, making it suitable for both superficial and subcutaneous closures.
